Your Cotten Picking Laureate

Author’s Note: Burrrrr! Yep picking dem cotton balls can burr your fingers up a might iffen yor not reeel careful. Cotton was king in the South. Supplied Europe made the south rich. What us kids liked was a week off from school second week of October to pick cotton in my days. “Pick a sack ‘o cotton, pick a sack or two. Pick a peck ‘o cotton sacks, boy, afore we feed you!”

Cotton picking is always associated with slavery but after Lincoln, a Republican, freed the slaves, we still had to pick cotton. Paul used to say, “We should’a picked our own cotton.” And we did there awhile afore the McCormick reaper came along. What took us so long? Have you ever seen a cotton gin? Amazing device.
